Wisdom Tooth Removal

Wisdom Tooth Removal Post-Operative Instructions

Congratulations on taking the first step towards improved oral health by undergoing wisdom tooth removal. To ensure a smooth and comfortable recovery process, please review the following postoperative instructions carefully. If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to contact our office for assistance.

  1. Bleeding: It is normal to experience some bleeding following wisdom tooth extraction. To control bleeding, gently bite down on clean gauze pads placed over the extraction sites for about 30 minutes. Replace the gauze pads as needed until bleeding subsides.

  2. Pain Management: You may experience mild to moderate discomfort after the anesthesia wears off. Take any prescribed pain medications as directed by your oral surgeon. Over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen can also help alleviate discomfort. Avoid aspirin as it can increase bleeding.

  3. Swelling: Swelling is common after wisdom tooth removal and typically peaks within 48 hours. Apply an ice pack or cold compress to the affected area for 20 minutes on, then 20 minutes off, to help reduce swelling and discomfort.

  4. Diet: Stick to a soft or liquid diet for the first few days following surgery to avoid irritating the extraction sites. Opt for nutritious foods such as soups, smoothies, yogurt, mashed potatoes, and scrambled eggs. Avoid hot, spicy, or hard foods that may cause irritation.

  5. Oral Hygiene: Maintain good oral hygiene to promote healing and prevent infection. Gently brush your teeth with a soft-bristled toothbrush, being careful to avoid the extraction sites. Rinse your mouth with warm salt water (1/2 teaspoon of salt dissolved in a cup of water) several times a day to keep the area clean.

  6. Activity: Limit physical activity and avoid strenuous exercise for the first few days following surgery to minimize swelling and discomfort. Rest as much as possible and avoid bending over or lifting heavy objects.

  7. Avoid Smoking and Alcohol: Refrain from smoking or using tobacco products for at least 72 hours after surgery, as they can impair healing and increase the risk of complications. Avoid alcohol consumption during the healing period as well.

  8. Follow-up Appointment: Attend your scheduled follow-up appointment with your oral surgeon to monitor your healing progress and remove any stitches if necessary. If you experience persistent bleeding, severe pain, or other concerning symptoms, contact our office immediately for further evaluation.

By following these wisdom tooth removal instructions, you can help ensure a smooth and successful recovery process. Remember to be patient with yourself and give your body the time it needs to heal properly. If you have any questions or need additional guidance, don’t hesitate to reach out to our office.
